When I am afraid, I put my trust in you
When fear tries to take over, remember where your true security lies.
Scripture: Psalm 56:3-4 (NLT)
"But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?"
The Anchor in the Storm
Fear has a way of making everything feel bigger than it actually is. That presentation at work, that difficult conversation you need to have, that uncertainty about your future—it can all feel overwhelming when fear takes the driver's seat.
David wrote these words when he was literally running for his life, captured by enemies who wanted him dead. Yet in that moment of genuine, life-threatening fear, he made a conscious choice: "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you."
Notice he doesn't say "if" but "when." Fear isn't a sign of spiritual failure—it's a human experience. The difference isn't whether we feel fear, but where we turn when we do.
Reflection Question
What's one situation right now where fear is trying to dictate your next move? What would it look like to consciously shift your trust from your own ability to handle it to God's ability to carry you through it?
One Tiny Step Today
Take 60 seconds right now to name your fear out loud or write it down. Then speak or write this truth over it: "God, I'm afraid of ______, but I choose to trust you with it."
Prayer
God, thank you that you're not surprised by my fears. You don't dismiss them or tell me to just "get over it." You invite me to bring them to you and exchange them for trust. Today, I choose to trust you—not because my circumstances have changed, but because you haven't. You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. Help me to anchor my heart in that truth when the waves of fear try to pull me under. Amen.
